Prior to Heuer’s introduction of the racing-inspired, Carrera series, early Heuer chronographs were setting the standard for which the brand has since become known. This rare, ‘pre-Carrera’ from the 1940’s is a perfect example of Heuer’s commitment to utilitarian functionality, married to classical design. It has its original, two-register glossy black dial, showing definite, early transition to a tropical/brown tone. It also has its original, unsigned crown and corresponding pump-pushers.
Early vintage Heuer chronographs take many forms, both in case shape and dial configuration, with this one featuring distinctive ‘oversized’ registers and Feuille hands. Sized at 34.5mm and 13mm thick, it has a nice modern presence on the wrist, complemented by the large crown and original, high-domed plexiglass.
The watch is a two-register chronograph, with two sub-dials featuring the thirty-minute counter at three o’clock and a running seconds at nine o’clock. The sub-dials have silver-coloured, stick hands and are recessed, creating depth on the face. The unrestored, ‘chocolate’ dial also features an outer-track, denoting the chronograph seconds, offering balance and legibility. Further to this, the dial also displays silvered Arabic numerals, which reflect light from varying angels. Complimenting this purposeful, utilitarian timepiece is the addition of Feuille hands, matching the contrasting silver tones on the dial.
Powered by a Landeron 13 movement (often found in early examples of Heuer military watches), it features a two-register chronograph with running seconds at nine o’clock.
Affectionately referred to as a ‘pre-Carrera’, this vintage Heuer Ref. 406 NR chronograph is a rare example of a truly original, archetypal tool watch that has everything a vintage collector would love. Its aesthetics, more closely related to those found in military watches, exhibit many of characteristics which make chronographs from the 1940’s so sought after today. The 30’s inspired, minimalist design tones offer unique insight into Heuer’s identity and principles throughout the period.
This watch is fitted with a black leather rally strap and stainless steel tang buckle.
